Aseptic Meningitis after Embolization of Cerebral Aneurysms Using Hydrogel Coated Coils Report of Three Cases

American Journal of Neuroradiology 28:511-512, March 2007

We report the development of aseptic meningitis in 3 patients with aneurysms treated with hydrogel-coated coils. Patients presented with febrile meningeal syndromes during the 24 hours following the procedures and responded to corticosteroids. One of them developed delayed hydrocephalus that required treatment with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Aseptic meningitis is one of the important complications related to hydrogel-coated coils that should be recognized. More information based on the posttreatment surveillance after use of hydrogel-coated coils is required.

Early use of terlipressin in catecholamine resistant shock improves cerebral perfusion pressure in severe traumatic brain injury

Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica, Volume 51, Number 4, April 2007, pp. 505-508(4)

Maintaining adequate cerebral perfusion pressure is an essential aspect in the treatment of severe acute brain injury. To accomplish this therapeutic goal vasopressors are usually required. Vasopressin is an important endogenous stress hormone and the infusion of low-dose vasopressin and terlipressin has been used to reverse severe hypotension.

IL1RN VNTR Polymorphism in Ischemic Stroke

Stroke. 2007;38:1189

Association fibre pathways of the brain parallel observations from diffusion spectrum imaging and autoradiography

Brain 2007 130(3):630-653

Understanding the long association pathways that convey cortical connections is a critical step in exploring the anatomic substrates of cognition in health and disease. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is able to demonstrate fibre tracts non-invasively, but present approaches have been hampered by the inability to visualize fibres that have intersecting trajectories (crossing fibres), and by the lack of a detailed map of the origins, course and terminations of the white matter pathways.

Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation. 22(1):56-64, January/February 2007

Despite significant advances in the understanding of pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI)-related sequelae, members of the medical community working with adult survivors often do not appreciate the impact of "latent" effects of these injuries. To assess deficits and facilitate intervention, the interactions among the nature of the TBI, the individual's developmental course, and the history of community response must be understood.

Does the left inferior longitudinal fasciculus play a role in language A brain stimulation study

Brain 2007 130(3):623-629

Although advances in diffusion tensor imaging have enabled us to better study the anatomy of the inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF), its function remains poorly understood. Recently, it was suggested that the subcortical network subserving the language semantics could be constituted, in parallel with the inferior occipitofrontal fasciculus, by the left ILF, joining the posterior occipitotemporal regions to the temporal pole, then relayed by the uncinate fasciculus connecting the anterior temporal pole to the frontobasal areas.

Continuous Monitoring of Cerebrovascular Autoregulation After Subarachnoid Hemorrhage by Brain Tissue Oxygen Pressure Reactivity and Its Relation to Delayed Cerebral Infarction

Stroke. 2007;38:981

Disturbances of cerebrovascular autoregulation are thought to be involved in delayed cerebral ischemia and infarction after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). We hypothesized that the continuous monitoring of brain tissue oxygen (PtiO2) pressure reactivity enables the detection of impaired autoregulation after SAH and that impaired autoregulation is associated with delayed infarction.

Outcomes Validity and Reliability of the Modified Rankin Scale Implications for Stroke Clinical Trials

Stroke. 2007;38:1091

The modified Rankin scale (mRS), a clinician-reported measure of global disability, is widely applied for evaluating stroke patient outcomes and as an end point in randomized clinical trials. Extensive evidence on the validity of the mRS exists across a large but fragmented literature. As new treatments for acute ischemic stroke are submitted for agency approval, an appreciation of the mRS's attributes, specifically its relationship to other stroke evaluation scales, would be valuable for decision-makers to properly assess the impact of a new drug on treatment paradigms.

Neuron Volume 53, Issue 2 , 18 January 2007, Pages 307-314

It is a commonly held view that numbers are represented in an abstract way in both parietal lobes. This view is based on failures to find differences between various notational representations. The Factor V Leiden Prothrombin Gene 20210GA, Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase 677CT and Platelet Glycoprotein IIIa 1565TC Mutations in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke and Atrial Fibrillation

Stroke. 2007;38:1069

We wanted to investigate whether common prothrombotic mutations are more prevalent in patients with atrial fibrillation who have had a stroke than in healthy controls. We also wanted to assess whether early recurrent ischemic cerebrovascular events were more frequent among carriers of the factor V Leiden or the prothrombin gene mutations than among others.

Variations in the use of diagnostic procedures after acute stroke in Europe results from the BIOMED II study of stroke care

European Journal of Neurology, Volume 14, Number 3, March 2007, pp. 255-261(7)

Valid classification of stroke is essential to initiate effective acute management and early secondary prevention strategies. To accurately evaluate stroke subtype a number of diagnostic procedures have to be performed. This study sought to investigate variations in use of diagnostic procedures across selected European hospitals.

Prefrontal N Acetylaspartate and Poststroke Recovery A Longitudinal Proton Spectroscopy Study

American Journal of Neuroradiology 28:470-474, March 2007

Functional imaging studies suggest that poststroke recovery is related to the reorganization in both contralesional and ipsilesional prefrontal cortex. Little is known, however, about how longitudinal metabolic changes in prefrontal regions relate to the improvement after stroke. We sought to determine whether poststroke recovery is associated with changes in N-acetylaspartate/creatine (NAA/Cr) ratio within contralesional prefrontal regions.

Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation in elderly patients analysis of outcome and complications

BMC Neurology 2007, 7:7

There is an ongoing discussion about age limits for deep brain stimulation (DBS). Current indications for DBS are tremor-dominant disorders, Parkinsons disease, and dystonia. Electrode implantation for DBS with analgesia and sedation makes surgery more comfortable, especially for elderly patients.
