The Neuroimaging Center of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium Collaborative Neuroimaging in Pediatric Brain Tumor Research A Work in Progress

American Journal of Neuroradiology 28:603-607, April 2007

As an essential part of the National Cancer Institute (NCI)-funded Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium (PBTC), the Neuroimaging Center (NIC) is dedicated to infusing the study of pediatric brain tumors with imaging "best practice" by producing a correlative research plan that 1) resonates with novel therapeutic interventions being developed by the wider PBTC, 2) ensures that every PBTC protocol incorporates an imaging "end point" among its objectives, 3) promotes the widespread implementation of standardized technical protocols for neuroimaging, and 4) facilitates a quality assurance program that complies with the highest standards for image data transfer, diagnostic image quality, and data integrity. To accomplish these specific objectives, the NIC works with the various PBTC sites (10 in all, plus NCI/ National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke representation) to ensure that the overarching mission of the consortium-to better understand tumor biology and develop new therapies for central nervous system tumors in children-is furthered by creating a uniform body of imaging techniques, technical protocols, and standards.

Life Expectancy After Perimesencephalic Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

Stroke. 2007;38:1222

Patients with a perimesencephalic nonaneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage are not at risk for rebleeding in the initial years after the hemorrhage. Nevertheless, uncertainty remains on the long-term prognosis after perimesencephalic hemorrhage, and former patients are often considered high-risk cases for health insurance or are denied life insurance.

Coping Strategies as Determinants of Quality of Life in Stroke Patients A Longitudinal Study

Cerebrovascular Diseases 2007;23:401-407

Quality of life (QoL) is reduced for stroke patients and coping strategies have been suggested as determinants of QoL. Thus far the relationship between coping and QoL has only been examined in small-scale cross-sectional designs. Therefore, the current study set out to examine this relationship in a longitudinal setting.

Whole Brain Histogram and Voxel Based Analyses of Apparent Diffusion Coefficient and Magnetization Transfer Ratio in Celiac Disease Epilepsy and Cerebral Calcifications Syndrome

American Journal of Neuroradiology 28:479-485, March 2007

Diffusion and magnetization transfer (MT) techniques have been applied to the investigation with MR of epilepsy and have revealed changes in patients with or without abnormalities on MR imaging. We hypothesized that also in the coeliac disease (CD), epilepsy and cerebral calcifications (CEC) syndrome diffusion and MT techniques could reveal brain abnormalities undetected by MR imaging and tentatively correlated to epilepsy.

Giant Intracranial Aneurysms Treated With Deep Hypothermia and Circulatory Arrest

Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology. 19(1):25-30, January 2007

The use of deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA), using groin cannulation with the chest closed (CCDHCA), has improved the surgical treatment of large and giant cerebral aneurysms. Twelve consecutive ASA I-II patients (10 women and 2 men), with a mean age of 35 years (range 14 to 55 y) underwent DHCA for clipping or trapping of their aneurysm (giant, n=10; large, n=2; 42% posterior circulation), under balanced general anesthesia. Intraoperative standard monitors were completed with jugular oxygen saturation, pulmonary artery, pulmonary artery occlusion, central venous pressures, electroencephalography, evoked potentials, and cerebral (subdural), and core temperature.
