One look at Alyssa Tippett, and it's clear. She doesn't want you to feel sorry for her. But behind the modern spectacles, trendy hair tie and teen slang, you'll find a 14-year-old with memories no child should have. For Alyssa, it's been a long 12 months. Because of the brain injury, her neurologist still doesn't allow her to run, jump, ride a skateboard or attend gym classes. She suffers from headaches and had to get glasses because her vision has declined. VIDEO LINK.<br />

Recent research reveals that not just the elderly are at risk for strokes; it's estimated that every month in the Bay Area at least two newborns will have a stroke, often with devastating consequences. Emma Jabs seemed perfectly normal at age eight months when she suffered a medical complication that changed the trajectory of her young life. "I could not believe that a baby -- my baby -- had had a stroke," explains the girl's mother. Her husband had the same reaction: "I didn't even know it was possible for a stroke for children. Total disbelief."<br />

During the year I spent doing journalism training in Cardiff, a film was released called Sliding Doors. Starring Gwynneth Paltrow, it shows two versions of the same woman’s life. At the start of the film you see her running for a tube train. In the first plot line, she just manages to catch it while in the second, the sliding doors of the carriage close merely a couple of seconds too soon. From that point, you see her life unfolding in two different directions, with both stories running in parallel.<br />

Law enforcement criticized for handling of gang rapes of developmentally disabled Fall River man MASSACHUSETTS

Advocates for the developmentally disabled say law enforcement authorities could have done more to prevent the repeated gang rapes of a mentally handicapped man. Suspect Buddy E. Smith, 22, of Fall River, as well as an uncle of Mr. Smith and several friends who are still at large, stalked, kidnapped and raped the mentally retarded man more than a dozen times from 2004 to 2007, prosecutors say. Mr. Smith and his friends also engaged in a campaign of threats and intimidation to keep the Tiverton, R.I., man from reporting the crimes, prosecutors said.<br />
