Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) has greater volume expansion effect and longer intravascular persistence than crystalloids. HES also decreases microvascular permeability and capillary leakage by biophysically plugging endothelial leaks, exerting an anti-inflammatory effect, and decreasing activation of endothelial cells.
