The precise role of airway smooth muscle in the pathogenesis of asthma remains uncertain. The contraction of airway smooth muscle certainly causes acute narrowing of the airway and airflow obstruction in asthma, and smooth-muscle mass is increased in asthmatic airways.

In developing countries, where resources are scarce, it is paramount that the clinician be familiar with the most cost-effective diagnostic and therapeutic modalities available. The fiberoptic bronchoscope is an expensive piece of equipment, but can be an economical diagnostic tool in tropical pneumonias.
Nitric oxide (NO) is generally increased during inflammatory airway diseases. This increased NO stimulates the secretion of mucin from the goblet cells and submucosal glands, but the exact mechanism is still unknown. In this study, we investigated potential signaling pathways involving protein kinase C (PKC) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in the NO-induced MUC5AC mucin gene, and protein expression in A549 cells.
We tested the hypothesis that maternal interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) pretreatment and induction of fetal cortisol synthesis activates MAP kinases and thereby affects lung fluid absorption in preterm guinea pigs.
The range and relative impact of microbial pathogens, particularly viral pathogens, as a cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in hospitalized adults has not received much attention. The aim of this study was to determine the microbial etiology of CAP in adults and to identify the risk factors for various specific pathogens.
In contrast to asthma, the indication for bronchodilators prior to bronchoscopy in patients with COPD has not been properly investigated. We therefore performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to determine whether use of a short-acting bronchodilator provides a protective effect in patients with COPD undergoing bronchoscopy.

It has been recognized that mandibular advancement splint (MAS) treatment is effective in some, but not all, patients with obstructive sleep apnea

Chronic eosinophilic pneumonia (CEP) is a disease of unknown cause. The hallmark of CEP is eosinophil accumulation in the lungs. While the triggering factor is unknown, eosinophil accumulation in the lungs is now believed to be secondary to the actions of eosinophil-specific chemoattractants, including eotaxin and regulated upon activation, normal T-cell expressed and secreted (RANTES), and IL-5 released from Th2 lymphocytes in the lungs.
Planning public health responses against pandemic influenza relies on predictive models by which the impact of different intervention strategies can be evaluated. Research has to date rather focused on producing predictions for certain localities or under specific conditions, than on designing a publicly available planning tool which can be applied by public health administrations.

The signs and symptoms indicating the possible presence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) have a low specificity and sensitivity. Moreover, microbiological confirmation may be delayed up to 3 days and influenced by the previous use of antibiotics. However, VAP is one of the most frequent infectious complications in patients admitted to intensive care units and it is, therefore, necessary to improve the diagnostic arsenal for this infection.
Treatment of hospitalized infants with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis is mainly supportive. Bronchodilators and systemic steroids are often used but do not reduce the length of hospital stay.
Mechanical ventilation is an essential component of the care of patients with ARDS, and a large number of randomized controlled clinical trials have now been conducted evaluating the efficacy and safety of various methods of mechanical ventilation for the treatment of ARDS.

High resolution computed tomography of chest (CHRCT) and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed to study the cause of pulmonary dysfunction.
