Neutrophil cannibalism A back up when the macrophage clearance system is insufficient

Respiratory Research 2006, 7:143

During a lipopolysaccharide-induced lung inflammation, a massive accumulation of neutrophils occurs, which is normally cleared by macrophage phagocytosis following neutrophil apoptosis. However, in cases of extensive apoptosis the normal clearance system may fail, resulting in extensive neutrophil secondary necrosis.

Onset of relief of dyspnoea with budesonide formoterol or salbutamol following methacholine induced severe bronchoconstriction in adults with asthma a double blind placebo controlled study

Respiratory Research 2006, 7:141

The long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA) formoterol has an onset of effect comparable to that of salbutamol. Consequently, the combination of formoterol and budesonide in one inhaler, approved for maintenance use, can potentially be used for reliever therapy. This study compared the onset of relief from induced bronchospasm with single doses of budesonide/formoterol and salbutamol in patients with asthma.

Airway neutrophilia in COPD is not associated with increased neutrophil survival

Eur Respir J 2006; 28:1163-1169

Neutrophilic airway inflammation is a prominent feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and correlates with disease severity. The mechanisms that determine the extent of neutrophilia could involve increased influx or prolonged survival of neutrophils.

Elevated levels of interferon y inducible protein 10 and epithelial neutrophil activating peptide 78 in patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis

Respirology, Volume 11, Number 6, November 2006, pp. 708-714(7)

Interferony y-inducible protein (IP)-10 and epithelial neutrophil-activating peptide (ENA)-78 belong to the CXC chemokine family and are important factors in inflammatory lung diseases. In sarcoidosis, the potential role of IP-10 to regulate the migration and activation of T-cells towards sites of sarcoid activity has been suggested.

Transbronchial and transoesophageal ultrasound-guided needle aspirations for the analysis of mediastinal lesions

Eur Respir J 2006; 28:1264-1275

A tissue diagnosis of mediastinal nodes is frequently needed for accurate lung cancer staging as well as the assessment of mediastinal masses. Transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) is a safe procedure that is performed during routine bronchoscopy. Provided mediastinal metastases are confirmed, TBNA has a high impact on patient management. Unfortunately, TBNA remains underused in current daily practice, mainly due to the lack of real-time needle visualisation. The introduction of echo-endoscopes has overcome this problem.

Long term outcome in pulmonary arterial hypertension patients treated with subcutaneous treprostinil

Eur Respir J 2006; 28:1195-1203

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is fatal if untreated. Intravenous epoprostenol improves exercise capacity and haemodynamics in PAH, and increases survival in idiopathic PAH (IPAH). To evaluate the effects of subcutaneous (SC) treprostinil, a longer-acting prostacyclin analogue, followed by the addition of other PAH therapies if needed, 860 PAH patients treated with SC treprostinil for up to 4 yrs were followed.

Obstructive sleep apnoea and oral breathing in patients free of nasal obstruction

Eur Respir J 2006; 28:1222-1228

Although there is an association between nasal obstruction, oral breathing and obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS), it remains unknown whether increased oral breathing occurs in patients with OSAS who are free of nasal obstruction. The present study evaluated the relationship between breathing route and OSAS in patients without nasal obstruction.

Progression of pulmonary hyperinflation and trapped gas associated with genetic and environmental factors in children with cystic fibrosis

Respiratory Research 2006, 7:138

Functional deterioration in cystic fibrosis (CF) may be reflected by increasing bronchial obstruction and, as recently shown, by ventilation inhomogeneities. This study investigated which physiological factors (airway obstruction, ventilation inhomogeneities pulmonary hyperinflation, development of trapped gas) best express the lung function decline, and what role specific CFTR genotypes and different types of bronchial infection may have upon this process.
