Northeast Center for Special Care Receives the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) Quality Respiratory Care Recognition for the Eighth Straight Year

Lake katrine, NY, For the eighth year in row, Northeast Center for Special Care, a 280-bed long-term rehabilitation center specializing in respiratory and pulmonary care, ventilator dependency, ventilator weaning as well as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and complex medial recovery, has earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) by the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC).

The American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) started the Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) program in 2003 to help consumers find the best in respiratory care services. Northeast Center’s Respiratory Department earned this distinction in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and has one of the most successful weaning rates in New York state. The center has an established 40-bed unit dedicated to ventilator care and pulmonary rehabilitation, and a step-down unit for individuals who have been weaned from a mechanical ventilator.

In operation for close to 10 years, Northeast Center's ventilator program and the program’s experienced, compassionate staff, are recognized nationwide for providing excellent pulmonary rehabilitation.

In order to be considered for the AARC recognition a respiratory program must meet the following criteria:

  • All respiratory therapists employed by the hospital to deliver bedside respiratory care services are either legally recognized by the state as competent to provide respiratory care services or hold the CRT or RRT credential.
  • Respiratory therapists are available 24 hours.
  • Other personnel qualified to perform specific respiratory procedures and the amount of supervision required for personnel to carry out specific procedures is designated in writing.
  • A doctor of medicine or osteopathy is designated as medical director of respiratory care services

Receiving the Association’s Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) designation means the Ventilator and Respiratory Care Program at Northeast Center for Special Care meets strict quality and safety standards related to the provision of respiratory care services by qualified respiratory therapists.

AARC membership includes more than 46,000 health professionals involved in respiratory care nationwide. “Healthcare facilities that meet QRCR requirements provide a level of respiratory care consistent with national standards and guidelines, and should be commended for their commitment to quality care,” an AARC spokesman said. A list of QRCR healthcare facilities is maintained at the association’s website for consumers, YourLungHealth.org.
