Newsgroups/Usenet
If its been a long time since you have accessed a newsgroup
or if you never have here is some basic information:
Newsgroups or Usenet is one of the oldest forms of posting
messages on the Internet. It predates the age of
browsers, HTML, high-speed connections and technology that
we enjoy today.
There are a couple of ways to access newsgroups. The
first is to subscribe to a particular group or groups.
Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, Outlook, and
Thunderbird as well as other browsers and e-mail programs
have components so you can subscribe to and download
newsgroups through your ISP. Once you set-up your
browser and/or e-mail program you can click on any newsgroup
listed below and download that group. Remember not
every ISP has every single newsgroup available.
Newsgroups are generally un-moderated and are subject at
times to spam postings and occasional viruses if you open an
infected attachment so make sure you have a good virus
protection program.
A better way to access these groups is to read them on
Google groups. You can either type the newsgroup
address in like you would using any search engine or simply
copy and paste the group address from this page.
Google filters out some of the spam and there is no fear
from contracting a virus from Google. You can also
post to any newsgroup using Google. Google also
maintains Usenet archives dating back to 1981.
Newsgroups, like bulletin boards are a good way to connect
and interact with people about a topic of mutual interest.
It also is a good resource to gain information. Listed
below are disability and health related newsgroups.
