Time Inversion
By
John
W.
I enter the room backwards,
Leave my welcome mat behind,
Remove my backpack and slippers,
Then exit into the cold, harsh underworld.
Barefoot and pregnant,
Without a care in the world
Except to exist in a permanent playland
With no responsibilities.
As youths we strive for
Tag, Pin-The-Tail-On-The-Donkey,
Twister, and the infamous Erector Set.
Many a boy has indulged in this pleasure.
Our parents force us to read, write,
Play musical instruments, eat three meals a day,
Take baths, and jiggle the toilet handle.
As we grow older we learn to appreciate that
So-called work.
We take pleasure in gardening, cooking,
Writing poetry, and mowing the lawn.
As aunts, uncles, and grandparents,
We experience a rebirth of our childhood.
Playing Hide and Seek, Peek-A-Boo,
Monkey-In-The-Middle, and
Pop-O-Matic-Trouble.
Anything to spoil the children.
As I travel through time
To the end of existence,
I feel a little child inside of me
Crying to get out
And start all over again.
