"ICU 2000-01"  20" x 16"  2001

By Jurgen B.

For Jurgen B., living again was his best revenge. His life, fraught with traumatic events, seemingly ended when he was pronounced dead on New Year's Eve, 2000, only to be revived and continued for another six months. Between those moments on New Year's Eve and his actual death on June 23rd, Jurgen emerged as a newly-formed artist who was spiritually transformed.

His transformation began in early January when, upon his wife's insistence, he began coming to the art studio. Enduring enormous pain from multiple tumors, he immersed himself in the task of giving plastic expression to the defining events in his life. He first painted his near-death experience, I.C.U. 2000-01, and proceeded to paint seven more engaging and provocative paintings. In his transformed state, he realized the importance of compassion and humor and according to one family member, experienced the most happiness of his life.

A grinning Jurgen attended the opening reception of the exhibit, Amazing Art: A Celebration of Consciousness, at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art on June 2nd which included six of his paintings.  Surrounded by family, friends and admirers, the 'new Jurgen basked in the memorable legacy he had created.
