"Three Women" 11" x 14" 2000
By Ruth M.
"The art is
real" is a common response from visitors at the
Center. They don't mean 'real' as in realistic, but as
meaning authentic. The paintings and drawings, obviously
not the product of art projects, are understood as
personalized creations by the patients we call
'neighbors'. In some instances, I wonder whether these
creations result from choices or propensities.
Essentially, the distinction is between mental processes
and intuition. Artists/neighbors whose work has evolved
over a period of time achieve a balance between their
propensities and the choices they continually make.
Seventy-eight year old Alzheimer neighbor, Ruth, on the
other hand, draws either two or three women without
apparent choice. Sometimes she will choose the drawing
medium (pencil, marker, crayon) and other times it
doesn't matter. She apparently doesn't know who the
women represent or why she draws them. Ruth, elegant and
fastidious, says they just come out and she thinks
they're all "rubbish". This is also her
description of most of the art at the Center.
Her forms are beautifully delineated and, in their
standing positions, occupy the space with a commanding
presence. Ruth, like all our non-ambulatory
artists/neighbors, always conveys figures standing!
Neither propensity nor choice, such depictions emanate
from the subconscious desire to walk. Ruth was
delightedly shocked to receive payment from the sale of
a drawing.
