"Bridge, Railroad, Sailboat" 16" x 20"
2001
By Gary G.
Gary, a former truck driver
for fifteen years, developed Korsakoff Syndrome. At age
forty-two, he realized, being unemployed and his
marriage dissolved, that his life was wrecked, so he
checked himself into an alcohol rehab facility. He was
subsequently transferred to Northeast Center for Special
Care for
rehabilitation.
Initially, Gary resisted art but he was persuaded to
draw his delivery truck. A precise representation, this
drawing established his 'art connection', the discovery
of the necessity for creative expression. He did four
additional precisionist drawings as a prelude to
painting. And once he ventured into the arena of
painting, he began spending all his free time in the art
studio. Every morning he would check with me, then
write, "art studio-1:30", in his notebook, the
replacement for his short-term memory loss. Gary and his
wife reconciled; she was totally shocked that he had
become an artist and she became one of his most ardent
fans. Upon his discharge, they converted a bedroom in
their Brooklyn apartment into a studio.
