"Untitled" 11" x 14" 2001
By Dennis L.
Art at Northeast Center for
Special Care is a
process-oriented endeavor. Art as process means
accepting its propensity of being continuous, always
establishing ideas and conditions for its next
evolution. Thus, the momentum for continuation is
self-generating, just as one color or form leads to
another. All the artists represented in the calendar
have tapped into this principle.
Fifty-four year old Dennis who sustained an anoxic brain
injury at birth, compellingly demonstrates the
self-generating force of the art process. Except on the
occasions when he is not well, Dennis has appeared twice
daily in the art studio for almost two and a half years.
A man of habit, he appears with his transistor radio
early in the morning and immediately after lunch, while
launching into his usual chatter. During the chatter, he
plunges into formalizing his impulsiveness. His
repertoire and focus have greatly expanded as he now
normally works much longer on single pieces. He
thinks of his art as referential: stain glass windows;
Triboro Bridge, Brooklyn Queens Expressway; street
lights; etc. Whatever the reference, they are intense,
emphatic abstractions created by an adorable and
admirable human being.
