"My Father" 30" x 24" 2001
By Patty D.
Most visitors to Northeast Center
for Special Care encounter the legend "Artist, Mrs. Patty D.",
as she pens all her prolific outpouring of creative
energy. She is ubiquitous as is her work at
Northeast Center: it can be found in most administrative offices,
conference rooms, and secretarial booths. The common
refrain if you comment on someone's D. is, "You
should see the one in my living room." Patty is
inimitable, lovable, creative, bombastic, generous,
tough-minded - an extraordinary personality and artist!
A sense of self and the ability to choose, two of
Patty's traits, are considered fundamental to the
rehabilitation of brain-injured persons. In many ways,
she is the embodiment of what we strive to accomplish: a
confident, self-motivated individual who makes choices.
Her artistic signature, that is style, is so singular
that we have coined a word to describe it: 'Pattify'. If
someone wants specific artwork created, i.e., for a
wall, cart, etc., the first response is, "Do you
want it 'Pattified'?" - meaning good artistic
choices including all her signature images, i.e.,
hearts, shining sun, loose brush strokes and, of course
the words, "Artist, Mrs. Patty D."
