"Untitled" 11" x 14" 2001
By Judy S.
Judy possesses a distinct
artistic sensibility which excludes experimenting with
anything other than her choice of materials: markers,
pencils, paper and occasionally watercolors for tinting
or dipping her pencil into for color accents. The
pencil, for her, is an unproblematic extension of the
psyche. Her hand/pencil duet is constantly moving while
describing, defining and shading a surrealist coherence
of sense and nonsense. Sometimes she tires while
working and will lay her head on one arm, but the right
drawing arm continues to work. Occasionally she will
continue to draw when her eyes are closed and even when
her body is slowly sliding out of the chair toward the
floor. We have seen her continue drawing when her head
was below the plane of the table!
Her drawings, like those of the famous self-taught
artist Bill Traylor, always seem predestined as if the
artist is simply the vehicle for expressing some
essential truth. She is grooving and the grooving is
always complete and finished - it becomes terminated
when she has to leave the studio.
Judy developed a post-surgical seizure disorder and it
is presumed she developed anoxic brain injury from her
seizures. She is forty-two years old. Her connection to
art establishes her sole relationship to the world.
