"The Sculpture Garden" 30" x 24" 1999
By John E.
John
E., a neighbor who suffered a brain injury, a bilateral
skull defect and a history of diabetes, resisted the Art
Studio at first. Bette, his wife, encouraged him
to attend where he did a few deliberate, yet prosaic
designs. His "breakthrough" painting
(where all barriers are dissolved with the emergence of
content) was yet to come.
John was an observer when we began our outdoor sculpture
garden. The first project was a semi-circular,
double-faced stone wall containing three self-supporting
arches. John was intrigued by this archaic-looking
structure. He asked his family to photograph it
from different angles and he began making drawings based
on the photographs. Then after three weeks of arduous
work, there emerged the painting reproduced here.
Since this process enabled John to gain some pictorial
understanding, he typically continues to paint with an enhanced
knowledge of the mechanics of painting. In fact he
sold his next two paintings and donated the sales to the
resident fund with the proceeds going to the Art
Studio. John was discharged from Northeast Center for
Special Care. He lives at home with his wife.
