"Untitled" 20" x 16" 2002
By A.
Artist ‘A’,
who had been in a coma for eighteen months, was wheeled
into the art studio in April, 2002 in a semi-comatose
state. Starring blankly, ‘A’ had regained some
cognition and movement in his right arm. Stephanie, his
mother and I discussed a plan to have him brought on a
regular basis to the art studio so he would be
stimulated by all the activity and perhaps engage him in
making art. It is now a year later and ‘A’ has
completed nineteen paintings on canvas.
The paintings,
with deliberate strokes and color choices, indicate
cognitive development though his responsiveness has only
improved slightly. While in the art studio, he works
intently for one-hundred to one-hundred-twenty minutes,
on average, three times a week, We feel he is
experiencing some gratification.
