"Take Your Pick" 48" x 32" 1999
By Lynn D.
In this painting,
Lynn seems to implore us to choose with exclamation
points while also asking questions. What choices, what
questions, what references, we wonder? Or is she stating
her own inner conflicts and her personal resolution?
Interspersed with insects, private symbols, a man, and a
woman’s head are commas, exclamation points and eleven
question marks.
When Lynn did this painting, she had chosen life over
depression, having been diagnosed with myasthenia
gravis, an autoimmune muscular disorder. Formerly a
four-time world-champion bridge player with no hope or
ambition to play again, the process of painting
revitalized her spirits and consciousness. This
brilliant autobiographical painting is a testament , not
only to the therapeutic value of the art making process,
but also to Lynn’s personal courage and
strength. After rehabilitation Lynn was discharged
and reentered the community to rejoin her family.
She returned to her former successful career.
