"Untitled" 46" x 40" 2002
By Charles "Tusay" J.
This portrait is
of Stephanie W., a Northeast Center art studio assistant.
What inspired Charles was interesting.
In the summer of 2002, Charles was one of eight
Northeast Center Resident-Neighbors who went skydiving in Gardiner, NY as part of
our Life Challenge Program. This trip was arranged by
Stephanie W. who, in addition to being an artist, is an
experience skydiving videographer. Exhilarated by this
experience, Charles immediately began making plans to
paint Stephanie’s portrait during freefall.
On a four-foot-square canvas, titled to form a diamond
shape, he painted her from head to foot with
outstretched arms and her hands forming a mudra. Cloaked
in a pastel-colored, patchwork dress and emanating
colorful flanges, she weightlessly levitates in a void
with a benign gaze. In the top of the diamond, he wrote
‘imagine’, an allusion to John Lennon and a world
filled with wonder and equality. Charles is
discharged and living independently in the community,
living and painting independently, returning to the
Center as often as possible to paint in the art studio
