Art Studio
The Art Studio Program at Northeast Center for
Special Care was established in 1999 by noted artist Bill
Richards and continues under the direction of artist Susan
Togut. Its concept is to view each Resident-Neighbor as an
artist and encourage and assist each individual person to
develop their skills as an artist. The Art Studio Program is not traditional art
therapy, rather, it is an ongoing, active community of artists.
Resident-Neighbors are given the opportunity to develop as
artists and with that many come to see themselves as
creative people and redefine their role as an artist. From this individuals are able to identify and
express themselves in a way that allows them the ability to
get in touch with their emotions, feelings, and desires. Their creative energy raises their self-worth, gives
them the opportunity to actively participate in creation of
a work of art and affords them the chance to be a part of an
important creative community.
Many of our Resident-Neighbor have become accomplished
artists who have had their works displayed in art exhibits
all over the country, as well as having had their works published in
magazines and in featured articles in publications such as
the New York Times and Spirituality and Health magazine.

Since Northeast Center for Special Care is a therapeutic
community the benefit derived is a form of cognitive
rehabilitation. Individuals
with brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, paralysis,
respiratory disorders and who may be or have been on a
mechanical ventilator are able once again to initiate a
project, perform multiple steps and see the project through
to completion. They also have been able to participate in
their community as individuals who make a valuable
contribution. For some this may be first time they have been able to
accomplish that since their injury. In effect this is healing art. |

From the beginning the Art Studio at Northeast Center for
Special Care is a part of a larger mission of
rehabilitation, recovery and community reentry of
individuals with brain injury and other disorders – to
recognize the dignity and value of each individual
The Art Studio program is under the supervision of a professional artist. The
program is therapeutic, but it is not traditional art
therapy. The Art Studio is one of many innovative and alternative
treatment modalities we employ at Northeast Center for
Special Care.
