Mardi D., age seventy-seven, had a creative background from an early age. She was trained in the visual arts, as well as piano and voice, leading her to the Boston Conservatory of Music. Back in the late 1940’s she wanted a career rather than marriage, hoping to be an opera singer. In New York City she married a cellist, integrating show business with family life. The couple had one daughter who showed signs of neurological problems and learning disabilities. Her husband’s untimely death left Mardi focused on the care of her child and there was no time for making art during that extended period. Mardi’s health gradually declined with walking problems, pneumonia,
and congenital heart failure which caused her to be placed on a
ventilator that led her to the Northeast Center. After she was weaned
from the ventilator engagement in the Art Studio increased as her art
skills returned and markedly improved. Now she attends several times a
week, morning and afternoons, working on portraits, landscapes,
religious themes and special commissions. Her art improves exponentially
as she inspires other Resident-Neighbors, staff and visitors.
