"The Flaming Owl"  24" x 28"  2004

By Phillip W.

Phillip W. is a prolific artist.  He painted as a young boy and speaks emphatically of his experiences of painting throughout his whole life.”

Watching Phillip at work is exciting.  A painting evolves quickly and goes through multiple changes in a flash.  Nothing is precious in this work.  Whatever image pops in his mind goes immediately to the canvas.  Images flow into images as colors may be applied heavily through his quest to express his imagination with instinct and clarity. A hidden, but strong story line typically informs the work.  When the right combination of strong image, color, texture, and meaning integrate at a particular moment the painting is deemed complete.

The Flaming Owl is a prime example of Phillip’s compelling ‘outsider’ vision.  This imagined creature looks straight out at the viewer, coming alive through the pulsating color, heavy texture, and repetitive forms which harks back to aboriginal and other cultures.
