Challenged with cognitive and other conditions, Ruth was smitten with painting from the moment she discovered the dynamic Art Studio. While she enjoyed art as a child and teenager, she received no training and did not practice it again until coming to Northeast Center. Ruth works in a free form, abstract style, reminiscent of the Abstract Expressionists of the 1950’s. While she requires assistance, her staccato brushwork has great vibrancy created through rhythmic gestures as if in a dance. Often she paints beyond the boundaries of a particular plane, creating a multi-dimensional effect. This example has an upbeat, gushing movement. Painting gives Ruth much joy, as her artist skills improve, and sense of fulfillment grows. She will continue to paint and explore other artforms with her compelling appreciation of the process. She has been a winner of the NYSHFA calendar competition and has participated in regular community exhibitions.
