Joe acquired a brain injury as a result of an automobile accident . Though untrained, he loved drawing as a youngster and always saw textual images as his special vocabulary. Since coming to Northeast Center he discovered the Fine Arts Program through which he expanded his idiosyncratic, calligraphic style. His drawings and paintings combine text and imagery in an abstract, highly personal manner as seen in this example. They can be labyrinthian and obsessive, sometimes referencing a grandparent or other family member. In contrast to his personal work, Joe has also been an active participant of collaborative mural painting, spreading his special, visual language, filled with hidden meanings, across the walls of his unit.
