Our History
Northeast Center for Special Care is
the result of a vision - a special care
program of rehabilitation and recovery to serve individuals with complex
needs such as brain injury, neurobehavioral disorders, spinal cord injury,
complex medical recovery, ventilator care and ventilator weaning. We
were conceived as a program that would assist individuals with challenging
issues including those who may have been seen as poor rehabilitation candidates.
From its inception in the mid-1990’s and since our opening in March of
1999, the Northeast Center for Special Care mission is the rehabilitation and
reentry of our Resident-Neighbors to the most integrated settings.
Our mission was set well before the Olmstead vs. L.C. Supreme Court
Decision in June of 1999.
From our first discharge to the community in May of 1999 and over one
thousand other discharges since then, Northeast Center for Special Care
has been true to its vision. That mission is practiced every day as more
and more of our Resident-Neighbors become Northeast Center program
graduates and move on to where they truly belong - independent, supported
and in the same communities we all live in. We live the spirit of Olmstead in everything we
do and to break the cycle of institutional dependence.
Our Purpose
Our Resident-Neighbors are supported through various phases of
recovery and rehabilitation ultimately toward reentry into the community.
To maximize the greatest, positive outcomes, Northeast Center for Special
Care offers a wide range of innovative therapeutic approaches combined
with medical, rehabilitation and recovery services.
Our staff includes physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists,
psychiatry, neurology, neuropsychologist, recreation specialists, physical therapists,
occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, respiratory
therapists, an artist in residence, and other disciplines.
Our Commitment
We believe that the most important measure of the quality of our
interdisciplinary team approach is the measurable success achieved by
those we serve including their families. We have taken what science and
technology have to offer and have created a total therapeutic growth
experience. Our programs are organized in a way that addresses such
individual's changing needs throughout all phases of recovery.
We are a complete therapeutic community with eight distinctive
neighborhoods. We offer access to the internet, a restaurant, post office,
bank, resident-run store, hair salon/barbershop, fitness equipment,
Eden-type atria with birds, fish, other animals and plant life. Our fine
arts and performing arts programs are innovative and unique and encourage
emotional well-being and personal growth.
Northeast Center for Special Care is located on a
lovely thirty-nine acre campus at
the foot of the picturesque Catskill Mountains in Lake Katrine,
NY. Our two hundred and nine thousand square foot state-of-art facility
provides accommodations for two hundred and eighty Resident-Neighbors. We are minutes
from the New York State Thruway.
